Often, I hear Americans (more specifically on the left, sometimes the right) defend Muslims. Yet I never hear about people defending atheists, unless if that person happens to be an atheist. As an atheist, I can be given the death sentence in at least 13 countries. In so many more, I can be murdered by people with meat cleavers or the like, and the police wouldn't give a damn. I am discriminated against in MANY countries. In the US, I can't serve in Government in 8 states (last I checked). I can lose my children in a divorce custody battle if my ex-partner is religious. I am given less priority for, say, a kidney, as a religious person is. Crimes against atheists are rising at a fast, and ghastly, rate. People can openly discriminate against atheists. I can lose my job just for telling people that I am an atheist. The list goes on.
And yet people have the audacity to tell me that I'm "privileged"? That I have it better? I'm sorry, but I'm not the one who kills others simply for their religious beliefs. In Muslim-dominated countries, I have the least rights. I am very likely to get killed, murdered, or other, just for being atheist.
I am NOT privileged. Look for privilege before you wrongly assign it.
